April Ross
April Ross is one of just a handful of female beach volleyball athletes to win medals at more than one Olympics. Alix Klineman, taking part for the very first time at Tokyo's Olympic Games is hoping to secure her third medal. More than that though Ross is aiming to capture her first Olympic gold. At 39 she could have her final chance. Her confidence is high but she is not sure. Ross was mentioned on NBC Boston as saying that if you play your top, even if you play well we will get the gold. It's also going to be a matter of chance. Ross was born in California, Costa Mesa in 1982. Her parents and sister were residents in the area. The athletic pursuits she pursued continued at Newport Harbor High School where she was a part of a number of sports. Along with playing indoor volleyball, she also ran track and basketball as a pre-collegiate athlete. But she stood out during this game. In her college profile, she played outside of the hitter, middle blocker, and setter throughout her volleyball time during high school. She was awarded by the Gatorade National Circle of Champions Player of the Year in 1999, for her performance. The year 2000 was the time she won the Orange County Athlete of the of the year for volleyball. Ross and Klineman have been doing what they do since 2017. But, Ross was a major player in the world of beach volleyball prior to the pair. The fact is, she's won multiple big tournaments and one of them was a renowned volleyball player. Ross teamed up together with Jennifer Kessy from 2007-2013, and was also Klineman's coach. Along with Kessy Ross, she won a World Title in 2009, while racing in the international circuit. They won a Silver Medal during the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. They were knocked out of the gold medal by the legendary duo comprised of Misty May-Treanor as well as Kerri Walsh (Jennings). Ross Walsh was Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's retirement. They won the bronze medal in beach volleyball at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Ross was a player for the Trojans of USC in her college after graduating from high school. Ross had an impressive run in the college. The year 2000 was her freshman year. saw her earn the Pac-10 and NCAA Freshman's of the award and become an All-American. Her Trojans made it to the Final Four. Her personal life was tense after a devastating loss in her sophomore, however, she was capable of achieving the All-American award. Over her final two years within the team, she guided the Trojans up to the top of the mountain winning successive national titles. She had established herself as an all-time great by winning the 2003-04 Honda Sports Award as the highest ranked female volleyball player. Ross studied at USC in International Relations. Unfortunately, Ross mother Margie was not able to witness Ross rise to the very top of beach volleyball stardom. Ross suffered the loss of her mother to breast cancer in the year 2001.
